People In Music History
Webern, Anton von (1883-1945) Austrian composer, pupil of Schoenberg, whose
twelve-tone technique he adapted to an individual style much concerned with
establishing the relationship between a particular tone quality and a
particular note. His works, mainly vocal or in the nature of chamber music, are
few and tend to extreme brevity; no. 4 of his Five Pieces for Orchestra (1913)
scored for 9 instruments including mandolin, takes 6 bars and lasts 19 seconds.
Other works include a symphony; variations for orchestra; cantatas; 5 works for
string quartet; canons for voice, clarinet, and bass clarinet; songs. He was
accidentally shot dead in the Allied occupation of Austria. His posthumous
influence on younger composers (and older, e.g., Stravinsky) has been
conspicuous.
